King Breaks Campaign "Promise"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 04, 2011
[Madison, WI…] The Committee to Elect a Republican Senate (CERS) reacted to Senator Jessica King’s actions on the floor of the Senate this week:
Jessica King broke her first campaign “promise” this week when she utilized a loophole in the Senate rules in an attempt to bring bills to the Senate floor that had not gone through the normal vetting process. Using what’s known as a “pulling motion,” Senate Democrats tried to force three bills onto the floor of the Senate which had not received public hearings, been debated or voted on in their respective committees.
Shortly after winning her recall race, King stated “I think the basic democratic principles need to be restored first. We need to return back to fundamental democratic processes so that a bill is introduced, people can discuss it, there’s debate, it’s amended and then considered.” [WisPolitics Report, 08-12-11]
Ignoring the fact that her statement was a blatantly inaccurate description of how a bill becomes a law, the actions of King and the Senate Democrat caucus this week deserve rebuke.
One of the bills would spend nearly a quarter billion dollars of taxpayer money to change the way the Department of Health Services operates (Senate Bill 232). Another bill, Senate Bill 272, had not yet been given a fiscal estimate, which means lawmakers would have been forced to vote on it without knowing the impact it would have on taxpayers or the state budget.
“Jessica King has quickly established a track record of saying one thing and doing another. Using loopholes to find ways to spend more taxpayer money on Democrat agenda items is not what her constituents expect of her, and directly contradicts the confusing statement she made about the democratic process,” said Dan Romportl, Executive Director of CERS. “King will have to face the voters of the 18th Senate District in one year, and by that time, she will have proven herself to be another tax-and-spend liberal who cannot be trusted to follow through on her campaign promises.”
