Sen. Sullivan Talks Right, Schmoozes Left

Senate Republican Leader Rips Into Fundraiser Hosted by Madison Liberals

(Madison, WI) – “I guess in Jim Sullivan’s world, talk is cheap – but rubbing elbows with far-left Madison liberals requires a campaign donation”, said Senate Republican Leader Scott Fitzgerald regarding a fundraiser being held in Madison later this week for freshman Democrat Senator Jim Sullivan, and hosted by – among others – Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk.

Sullivan is currently being challenged by Republican State Representative Leah Vukmir in the hotly contested 5th Senate District.  In September 2009, Sullivan was the first legislator to publicly endorse Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton and her failed attempt to succeed Governor Jim Doyle, and now almost one year later, he’s still cozying up to other like-minded liberals.  But yet, Sullivan is trying to convince voters in the District he’s a fiscal conservative who bucks the liberal leadership in Madison.  Fitzgerald says Sullivan obviously needs those liberals and their bucks in order to fund his campaign and hang onto his seat.

It’s no surprise to me he’s ducking out of the District for an evening of white wine and room temperature cheese in liberal downtown Madison, looking for campaign contributions,” Fitzgerald continued.  “As much as he claims to be a ‘fiscal conservative’, there’s no mistaking the company he now keeps, and what their agenda is for our state.”

Over the last two years, Senate Democrats have created billions in new taxes and fees, passed more restrictive government regulations on businesses and families, and have done virtually nothing to grow or even stabilize the economy.  Fitzgerald believes Sullivan is attempting to read the tea leaves and hoping he doesn’t get swept up in this resurgence of the conservative movement.  Fitzgerald says if voters want a fiscal conservative, then they should vote for the true fiscal conservative in Leah Vukmir, and not someone who hob-knobs with Madison elitists.

“If Senator Sullivan wants to schmooze in the belly of liberal Madison beast, he needs to stop referring to himself as a conservative,” Fitzgerald concluded. “The voters are looking for leaders with an honest plan to cut taxes, reduce spending, limit government, and most importantly – create jobs; Leah Vukmir has that plan and is ready to go on day one.”
